Hubcap Shields

I made my first hubcap shield in 1992. I have done shows of the shields in Nagoya, Edinburgh, Bristol and The Hague.

This entire collection of 52+ hubcap shields comprises a large wall installation entitled “The Ultimate Act”. The title refers to the quote, “ the ultimate act of a warrior is to lay down his sword”. From smaller to larger, these shields are arranged in the form of a spiral on a wall. This formation of growing shields is meant to resemble a giant shield intended to protect a large entity in its entirety.

The shields themselves represent my contention that I have lived 93 lives on this planet and that I was a warrior in 52+ of those lifetimes.  It is a personal and a universal anti-war statement.

I studied actual warrior’s shields at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian’s Research Center. Many of the shields have small items of personal power and protection attached to them. A hide cover is often attached to the face of the shield that conceals the items underneath and painted with symbols of the warrior’s specific visions. A colorful piece of fabric and dangling feathers complete the basic structure of the shield.

This installation has been in process for 10 years and was recently completed. None are offered for individual sale.
